UX and information design for passenger systems and mobility

We develop content and functional concepts for stationary customer information, on-board displays and personal travel planning on cell phones. We transform complex operating logics or timetable-related features into easy-to-understand designs.

Modernization of the stationary customer information
of the Swiss Federal Railways SBB

We were able to assist the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) with the comprehensive modernization of their customer information displays at train stations in Switzerland. The aim of the overall project was to make station information for travelers even clearer, easier to understand and more user-centric. Regardless of the size or passenger volume of the station.

As part of this modernization, classic platform and access displays were replaced with new, dynamic display forms and enhanced with additional information options. These include improved display elements for track changes, event information and situational content, which ensure faster orientation at the station.

In close cooperation with the SBB content lead, we approached the implementation of the new customer information displays step by step. From the conception of the information logics to the UX design and implementation support during ongoing operations. Our focus was on integrating real-time data, layout optimizations and user-centered information processes in such a way that travelers are informed faster and more securely at the station.

The modernization of the displays helps to ensure that information on departures, disruptions, track changes and other travel-related events is presented in an even more targeted and accessible way. Also for people with special needs.

New concept for a touch info column for the Swiss Federal Railways SBB

We developed the functional concept and interaction design of a new touch kiosk solution for small and medium-sized train stations for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The interactive information pillar combines real-time travel data with a radically user-centered, inclusive operating concept for public spaces. From the initial feasibility and ergonomics studies through to ongoing design development, we provide holistic support for the project. With a particular focus on inclusion as an integral part of the product, not as an afterthought.

Interactive elements are brought within reach for people in wheelchairs or of small stature. Readability and operating logic are adapted to the wheelchair user’s perspective. A dedicated physical button activates the audio output of all relevant travel information. Departure times, track changes or disruption messages are immediately audible. The solution combines tactile findability with clear acoustic feedback.

A high-contrast invert mode (light text on a dark background) improves legibility for people with impaired vision or in difficult lighting conditions. The reduced visual complexity supports quick orientation.
The project is designed as a learning system. Functional prototypes developed at an early stage were tested in a real station environment and validated together with user groups and experts. The touch kiosk solution is still being iteratively developed today. New requirements, technological possibilities and feedback from operations flow directly into the design optimization.

An overall concept for the multimodal mobility of the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn SZU

With SZU 4.0, Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn is pursuing a comprehensive programme for the future that will fundamentally modernize infrastructure, operations and systems. Stations are being converted, access points expanded, capacities increased and processes digitalized. The aim is to make public transport in the Zurich area more efficient, barrier-free and customer-oriented in the long term. As part of this transformation, customer information is also being rethought as an integral part of the infrastructure.

In connection with the infrastructural redesign, we were asked to redesign the entire stationary customer information system. Instead of looking at individual displays in isolation, we created an overarching overall concept that sees information as a spatial orientation system. Displays were not only technically renewed, but also clearly defined in terms of their function, hierarchy and effect in the space.

The added value lies in a consistent information logic across all stations. Passengers receive clearly structured, prioritized and easily comprehensible information at every touchpoint – tailored to their respective situation during the journey. Different display types take on clearly defined roles: from quick peripheral orientation in the flow of movement to an in-depth overview during decision-making or waiting times. Content, typography, contrasts and information density have been designed in such a way that they function reliably both in everyday use and in exceptional situations.

Particular attention was paid to accessibility, robustness and future viability. The system supports different operating modes – for example during construction phases or detour – while remaining consistent both visually and in terms of content. At the same time, it has a modular structure and can grow with the further development of SZU 4.0.
